Urban Decay's "UD Beauty Academy

Urban Decay · Sep 2025

Urban Decay transformed West Bund, Shanghai into a playful back-to-school enrollment fair (Sept 5-7, 2025), complete with purple school bus, student ID cards, and "registration" experiences.

Personally I still have nightmares about having to head back to school but I can appreciate the nostalgia value here and how this connects to positive vibes.

Its a simple, well-designed activation.

With the pop-up, Urban Decay tapped into back-to-school nostalgia + identity-making rituals and turned its enrollment efforts into a game. Participants could “register,” take ID photos, and leave with branded “admission gear,” all highly shareable on social.

We're seeing more brands adopt nostalgia marketing. Memories of youth (and notable rites of passage) drive strong emotional responses.

Given the party feel to this activation, it probably taps into what its customers wish school was like - the design is straight out of a Korean school TV series/drama. And, in this way, it frames Urban Decay as a fun, (slightly) rebellious beauty brand.
