UNIQLO tries to create some heat in lead-up to winter

Uniqlo · Oct 2025

UNIQLO launched the HEATTECH 热力街区 (“Thermal Power Street”) pop-up at Shanghai’s Xuhui GATE M West Bund Center (Oct 17–19, 2025).

The activation transformed HEATTECH’s core innovation — moisture absorption that generates heat — into a lively, science-meets-lifestyle experience.

Highlights included glowing orange pathways, thermal projection zones, interactive fabric-science demos, and live performances from 吴汉坤 (Wu Hankun), 蔡文静 (Cai Wenjing), and FAKE IN SANITY.

With its orange-to-pink visual identity and multi-sensory design, the event reframed warmth as both a physical and emotional experience, turning seasonal functionality into collective joy.

Uniqlo's results in China have been chilly

Uniqlo's business in China has been weak in the past couple of years.

In spring of 2025, they felt like they missed out on the turn of seasons, when temperatures stayed cooler a bit longer than expected, so this looks like a preemptive move to make sure they get ahead of the winter season.

BUT...

Uniqlo faces a broader challenge in China than mis-timed season activations.

They face a significant positioning problem. UNIQLO’s “quality-basic at fair price” sits between ultra-cheap turbo-fashion and premium/luxury.

As consumers chase value in 2025, Uniqlo is being passed over for either cheaper options (Pinduoduo and local staple brands) OR for more premium brands.

Reminding consumers of the value story of UNIQLO needs to be demonstrated firmly and repeatedly. The HEATTECH activation sits firmly within this goal-set.
