Sweaty Betty has re-entered China with a store activation at Jing’an Kerry Centre in Shanghai, with launch period running through to May 5.
The China business is now operated by Baozun, reflecting a full-stack model spanning retail, e-commerce, and local execution.
As more global brands hand China operations to e-commerce operators like Baozun (similar to Gap), a pattern is emerging.
These models are highly effective at scaling function — traffic, conversion, logistics — but can flatten emotion.

For brands like Sweaty Betty, built on community, empowerment, and lifestyle, that trade-off matters. When the operating model prioritizes efficiency, there’s a risk the brand’s distinct voice becomes standardized — optimized for performance, but less felt, less distinct.
And, in a crowded premium activewear market, system driven execution may not be enough. Can operator-led brands can retain — or rebuild — the emotional edge that made them relevant in the first place.

Do they end up chasing down new trends - to drive sales growth - at the expense of building a core brand ID and a solid community?
