The Swatch Art Peace Hotel turns 15
The Swatch Art Peace Hotel turns 15 this year.
To mark it, the residency left the Bund last week and installed six of its China based artists-in-residence across other locations, including; a bookstore, a café, a paper shop and a concept store in Shanghai. Check in, get a limited art gift. It was a simple, high-level brand, community effort.
Most commentary will file that under cultural marketing and ...this has been a foundational piece of a long-term cultural marketing effort by Swatch Group brands in China.
BUT ...there's an underlying story here about portfolio management.
Having supported Swatch Group on digital transformation in China, Ive seen how the group is skilled at building long-term results with both cultural marketing and portfolio laddering.
Swatch Group does not so much defend the sales of a single brand. Rather, it moves demand around its portfolio ladder as conditions change. Every brand has a defined price and role, so when the market shifts the group shifts weight rather than repositioning anyone too aggressively.

You can see it in results from the last half.
China's watch market is K-shaped, the same as most categories there now. The top held, with Harry Winston up significantly, while entry-level and affordable luxury labels also grew.
For many years it was all about laddering customers up from entry level brands like Hamilton and Tissot to Longines, then Omega ...Blancpain. Where now, there will be strategies in place to support laddering BOTH up and DOWN.

The overall halo they've created is critical to supporting these moves in both directions. But may be more important when supporting the laddering-down taking place now ...in that customers who wouldve bought Omega/Blancpain in the past will look to Longines as a brand that (1) is less expensive but (2) still has relatively high prestige (as conferred by the halo).
Hamilton and Tissot benefit from the same status boost they get from the group halo. More consideration and status flows to them than would otherwise be the case if not for the halo.
Which brings it back to the hotel. Swatch Group is running two halo machines at once.
1. The collabs with Swatch x Omega/Blancpain spend stored prestige to buy volume (and have delivered a lot of growth for the group).

2. The residency does the opposite... it accumulates authority slowly, concentrated mostly on the top brands while slowly lifting the prospects of more accessible brands.
One is a withdrawal. The other is a deposit. Most brands only know how to make withdrawals.
