Saucony launches a “Woolly” experiment in China

Saucony · Oct 2025

Saucony (索康尼) — operated in China by Xtep International — launched its Woolly lifestyle line (in Sept '25) with a stop-motion TVC and an offline “Dynamic Weaving Studio” (生动织造所) at Beijing’s Hopson One.

The campaign reimagines Saucony beyond running — using Merino wool to frame performance comfort as lifestyle design. The stop-motion TVC turns wool fibers into lively characters, while the hands-on workshop invited participants to craft mini sheep from the same material.

What does the Woolly line signals about Saucony’s path in China?

Developed exclusively for the local market, it reflects how Xtep’s steering Saucony toward lifestyle positioning — even as the brand remains rooted in technical running globally.

While is may make sense to blend performance and style - especially for China market - its not cleat whether Saucony has defined a clear enough brand position, identity and voice yet, in order to support this move.

Feels a bit like opportunistic move to ride a wool trend in China.

Questions that come up for me:

Is there a brand-stretch risk (alienating core runners)?

Wool is a high-growth clothing niche ...but does Saucony have logical link to it?

How could they better connect running, wool and technical/lifestyle?
