Onitsuka Tiger points to a premium path with Xintiandi flagship

Onitsuka Tiger · Jul 2026

Onitsuka Tiger opened a Shikumen flagship in Xintiandi — solid wood, tatami elements, a Mexico 66 heritage zone, a handmade leather gallery, and a staffed fitting area that treats shoe selection as service, not transaction.

With ~200 stores worldwide, one more opening isn't news. The location in heart of Xintiandi points to a more disciplined approach to premium positioning for the Tiger brand.

Premiumization plays out in location(s)

Onitsuka Tiger's operating margin sits near 40%, which sits more in the luxury space than sportswear. Tiger will be looking to defend this position with the right choices about retail. Xintiandi is a good marker of this claim.

In a K-shaped Chinese market, premium positioning and heritage are advantages and buffers against rising competition.

On is climbing the premium tier from a performance background. Luxury brands all have a range of sneakers...AND...

Local players like PANE are claiming cultural credibility on home turf, with a street/luxury approach. Take Yongyuan Rd, where PANE sits directly adjacent to Onitsuka Tiger ...the PANE shop is flush with customers, while Tiger is sparse ...so challenges are mounting.

The separation from Asics reads as commitment to that course

As standalone OT Group (set for January 2027), the brand gains autonomy from ASICS which should sharpen the focus on premiumization further.
