Can New Balance weave the right performance x style mix?
New Balance's "A Century of Craftsmanship" tour landed in Chengdu.
The brand experience pairs 120 years of manufacturing heritage, with Daoming bamboo weaving, a Sichuan intangible cultural heritage craft. The range leans on the archive, with newer performance-heritage silhouettes like the 2000/1890 ABZORB pointing to where the brand wants to go.
Having worked with the brand in the past ...New Balance has struggled to get the mix between lifestyle and performance right in China. For years the distributors in Asia oversold classic styles (eg. The 542), neglecting performance. When trends shifted (which they always do), they left the brand over-exposed.
Performance x Style was always the answer
Performance and style must work together to offset volatile shifts in consumer trends. Globally, New Balance nailed that blend — style with a genuine performance spine.

China's volume still runs on retro-lifestyle heroes. But the story New Balance is choosing to tell in Chengdu leads with craft, cushioning, and engineering lineage. They are trying to steer its meaning up the ladder, away from the silhouettes that once over-exposed it.

ABZORB 2000/1890 stand out as products that is aimed at resolving this challenge.
It’s unclear from this activation though, what other brand positioning moves New Balance is prioritizing to raise its profile in China again. While the brand is doing very well globally, it has sunk down the rankings of footwear brands in China
