Mizuno's Lifestyle to Performance Bridge

Mizuno · Sep 2025

Mizuno just opened a "Sportstyle" flagship in Shenzhen's MixC World.

While 'Sportstyle' focus is on streetwear culture and designs ...it hints at a deeper pedigree for the brand in performance. The store showcases reissued classics like Wave Rider 10 alongside Asia-exclusive designs.

Why This Resonates:

Having worked with New Balance in the past, I've seen this performance-lifestyle balancing act firsthand.

At different times in the past, New Balance has had incredible lifestyle momentum (eg. classic 574). But when the classic streetwear trend fades (or people move on to another hot brand), the brand are inevitably exposed to major sales declines. All the effort and focus went into milking the streetwear opportunity, while the performance offering was under-served.

New Balance learned from this experience and ultimately rebounded strong with models like the 990—designs that deftly blend street style with performance. With these cross-over designs, the brand can move people (and attention) strategically into 'street' or 'performance' as needed.

Mizuno faces the inverse challenge:

With sneakers, Mizuno have strong performance credentials but have largely been isolated in that space, as a niche player, with low sales volumes.

The Mizuno "Sportstyle" expansion might be an important move to grow its lifestyle appeal and create consideration among younger consumers. At the same time, this approach opens the door for more people in lifestyle to cross-over into its (core) performance offerings.
