McDonald's China is transforming 7,100+ restaurants into "McDonaldland" vacation destinations (Aug 13-31, 2025)
The "我去麦麦岛啦" activation brings nostalgic brand characters to life through:
13 flagship locations to feature theme-park level, immersive decor
Feature menu items (cotton candy McFlurry, bubble soda, flavored fries)
Physical "McDonaldland Gazette" newspapers for deeper storytelling

Why this matters:
McDonald's faces stiff competition in China as they push for 10,000 stores by 2028. It is trailing key competitors in store-count. KFC, its main international competitor has 11,900 locations. Local players like Mixue (40,000+ locations) Tastien (塔斯汀) and Wallace (a local burger chain) all lead in store number and in locations (cities) served in China.
To overcome challenges with menu-resonance (not being fully localized) and price/discounting disadvantages, McDonald's is hoping to demonstrate value-add, beyond whats on the food menu ...making it a place for fun, excitement.

Strategic considerations:
Leveraging unique brand assets (IP) provides McDonalds with a different path forward. By using nostalgic brand characters (that others can replicate) McDonalds is aiming to differentiate - especially into lower tier, newer markets.
As a kid, the "pull" of going to McDonalds was less about the food, and more about the characters, toys and play ...so it feels like this approach has merit.

But, if Chinese consumers are shifting further away from "value" toward "discount" then this might not create the gains hoped for.
