Fenty's Chengdu activation points to a better formula?
Following up on last week's discussion about China activation challenges—Fenty Beauty just demonstrated a formula for balancing attention/engagement while also being scalable/replicable.
Fenty's themed "辣辣LAND" in Chengdu blends mahjong, dragon motifs, retro TVs, and nostalgic Chengdu street aesthetics. AND, the activation for a product called "Heat" fits well into this city, space and design.
Its big enough to stop people in their tracks, small enough to roll out across multiple cities (with local twists along the way).
Why This Works:

Modular Design: Cultural elements can be swapped for different cities (Beijing hutongs, Shanghai lanes, etc.)
Cost-Effective Impact: Interactive games + local cultural cues create buzz without massive infrastructure spend
Content Multiplication: Each city version generates fresh social content

OOH activations in China have reached epic proportions. While brands who can take over a city block, mall or district enjoy brief moments of AWE ...those moments pass-by quickly, as the next brand moves with a bigger installation.
As this wave of monolithic scaled activations continues, the long-term path to success may lie in some of what Fenty is doing here...

The ideal formula is one where the activation is large enough to be recognized and stop people in their tracks BUT 'small' enough to be replicable (ideally across many cities) AND interesting enough to hold peoples' attention when presented as a series - both online and offline, across all brand channels.
