Burberry is carefully navigating China's luxury maze

Burberry · Jun 2026

Burberry staged a large-scale "Summer Maze" pop-up in Shanghai for its 170th anniversary... hedge maze, treasure hunt, giant chessboard, limited-edition Shanghai keychains, all built on British heritage codes. It lands mid-turnaround: Greater China up 4% for the year, accelerating to 10% in Q4, with China now over 30% of the brand's £2.42bn revenue.

But the more interesting story isn't the maze. It's the rotation it sits inside.

The rotation underway

There is a consumer rotation underway in China, and it has been for some time. Buyers are moving toward timeless (quiet) luxury... heritage brands that pay tribute to their heritage instead of pushing into other areas like streetwear.

The winners are the ones with understated, timeless, quality and image.

Burberry, with Chanel, Hermès, Loro Piana and others, deserve credit for being focused and disciplined.

Gucci might be the clearest casualty ... brand that pushed too far into the hype cycles of the past, getting close to streetwear instead of timeless luxury. Revenue fell 14% in Q1 2026, with Kering admitting "low cultural relevance" in China. You cannot quietly walk back a logo you spent a decade teaching people to want. Reversing a hype position is harder than maintaining a heritage one.

Burberry wandered too... chasing leather goods upmarket in 2023-24... but the detour was shallow, so the walk back to the trench was short. The 200+ scarf bars turn heritage into an accessible entry point without diluting the position.

The volume and breadth of luxury consumption in China is contracting. But for brands that are clear, focused and timeless, the rewards are there... and in the final calculus, they may find improved market share as a result.
