Is Alo going to be in a class of its own in China?

Alo Yoga · Oct 2026

On August 1, Alo Yoga launched an eight week community program in Shanghai: yoga, pilates, spinning and running sessions ahead of any store. The first China locations are confirmed ... Shanghai's Jing'an Kerry Centre and Beijing's Sanlitun Taikoo Li ... but they come after.

Rebuilding lost momentum

This has been one of the most anticipated entries in China retail for several years. Alo pulled back once already, hit by counterfeit product, and opened Korea first. The Shanghai program is the first real signal that intent is now firm.

The opportunity is a pricing layer. Lululemon has held dominant share here. Alo arrives more expensive and read as more premium, positioned to carve out a top tier above it ... particularly among affluent women who have been waiting for the luxury upgrade.

Order matters. Most entries lead with a flagship and backfill community afterward. Alo is warming the market first: eight weeks of sweat before it asks anyone to spend.

The open question is product, not marketing. Celebrity momentum and price both point premium, but whether the quality sits at Lululemon's level is far from settled. Chinese consumers are exceptional when it comes to evaluating the quality/value of brands.
