Deadpan Shop & Drop

Adidas Originals · May 2026

Adidas Originals built a three-day pop-up around a focused question: what if the Samba had its own convenience store?

At the fictional pop-up, shelves were stocked with 90s football magazines. Jerseys kept chilled in a freezer. Samba-branded snacks and drinks offered free to anyone wearing adidas or redeeming adiClub points.

The best part might be the addition of a fictional, 'soccer obsessed' konbini (shop) owner "Oda Samba Tencho" - played by comedian Jiro Shisonnu.

Shisonnu isn't a hype figure

...He's a character actor with real comedy credibility and deadpan style of humor. That choice set the tone: dry, specific, a little absurd.

The konbini format did the rest, grounding the activation in a format that feels genuinely local rather than staged for an audience.

Subtly and humor are so often overlooked in these types of brand activations.

Brands assume that people will overlook these nuances but they are in fact the touches that make brand activities credible and intriguing (especially in an environment where brands are pushing for scale/attention).
